Keep IT aligned with your business objectives

How to design an IT Strategic Plan

  1. Define the IT strategic planning scope and objectives: Start by identifying the scope of the IT strategic plan and what you want to achieve through it. This includes defining the areas of the IT department that will be covered by the plan, the timeframe for the plan, and the objectives and outcomes you want to achieve.
  2. Conduct a situational analysis: Perform a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the IT department, including its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis). This analysis should also consider the organization’s overall goals and objectives, industry trends, and emerging technologies.
  3. Define the IT vision, mission, and goals: Develop a clear and concise vision statement for the IT department that aligns with the organization’s overall mission and goals. This should be supported by a set of SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals that will guide the IT department’s strategic direction.
  4. Develop a roadmap for achieving the goals: Based on the vision, mission, and goals, develop a roadmap that outlines the steps and actions required to achieve them. This roadmap should include a timeline, milestones, key performance indicators (KPIs), and resource requirements.
  5. Develop an implementation plan: Translate the roadmap into an actionable plan by identifying specific projects, initiatives, and actions that need to be taken to achieve the goals. This plan should include details such as project timelines, budgets, resource requirements, risk management, and stakeholder communication.
  6. Monitor and measure progress: Continuously monitor and measure progress towards the goals and adjust the plan as needed to ensure alignment with changing business needs and technology trends.
  7. Communicate and socialize the plan: Communicate the IT strategic plan to key stakeholders, including senior management, business units, and IT staff. Socialize the plan and encourage feedback and input from stakeholders to ensure that it is well understood and supported.

Overall, designing an IT strategic plan requires a collaborative effort between IT and business stakeholders, and a focus on aligning IT goals with the organization’s overall business objectives.

  • Strategic planning: What we want to achieve?
  • Tactical planning: what we want? how are we going to execute? When and who?
  • Operational Planning
